The Theatre is Dead. // Personal Project, Custom Book Binding
The Theatre is Dead. is an accordion book of artists, art movements, and literary figures that inspire me.
“The Theatre is Dead. So stop using your monkey brain” is a cryptic statement that my quirky photography instructor has said on more than one occasion. In that regards, the quote is a reaction based on contemporary photography. The quote implies the theatre is dead, so the performance, specifically performance art via photography, should be happening in public spaces. This belief hinders on the idea that human nature can be understood by breaking down social barriers. I titled my book The Theatre is Dead. in part to this idea of evolution throughout art history. My influences are a fair mixture of contemporary icons, as well as monoliths throughout human history.
Throughout the book, common elements are used to create cohesion. The quotes: “The theatre is dead, so stop using your monkey brain” and “The theatre is dead, so start using your monkey brain” are the main typographic elements. The alternating quotes are a suggestion of constant critical engagement with the world around us.
