Your Genome, Yourself // Editorial Design, Illustration

The article, Your Genome, Yourself, written by David Howard, explores the advent of mail order genome testing services. The article engages readers with a few negative experiences with the top companies offering this service, but ventures expanding on the potential these services hold. The Human Genome is still a relatively new area of discovery in the modern medical field.

The spread was to appear in Proto Magazine, a magazine whose primary audience includes medical practitioners and researchers. As opposed to using photographic images and technical diagrams, I focused on the mail order aspect of the services offered. The main illustration includes genetic snips that spell out the word “Cancer.”

The illustration style was inspired by the mid-century technology boom in the United States. Advertisements for televisions, radios, and other gadgets new on the market were indicative of an audience that wanted more information about what waits for them around the corner. The design of the article is serious, with a slight comical tone, derivative from the editorial voice.
